Clazziquai edition seemed more lenient in difficulty, but for some reason it has a lower frame rate (scrolling notes don't seem to flow as smooth) than the other PSP releases so gives a poor initial impression (visually / graphics) for the series - if you have CFW installed, you can increase the clock speed on the PSP which I think helps a little with this issue. I think Portable 2 is actually a good starting point - good library of songs & mid-level difficulty. As others have pointed out, stay away from the PSP Go unless you're buying that strictly as a collectible.Ģ) I believe PSP games, at least the DJMax ones, are region freeģ) Even though BS is considered by many to be the pinnacle of the PSP DJMax games, it's also the most challenging so might be a hard initial entry for a newbie. The D-pad on the 2000 is improved over the 1000, but I found this to be most helpful on stuff like fighting games - DJMax still played quite well on the original 1000 imho.
It should be fine on 3000 as well since I believe that one was a fairly minor upgrade over 2000 with the major addition being a microphone. As far as DJMax goes, I have every single launch on PSP and find that the games play quite well on both 1000 & 2000.
Even though I have some of the shiny "new" stuff like a PS4 Pro & a pretty capable gaming PC, PSP still remains one of my favorite systems - huge library of games from all genres (including music/rhythm games) & a fantastic platform for running emulators for retro systems.
I still have my launch-day PSP 1000 as well as a PSP 2000 both running CFW (custom firmware). But because fever edition combines 1&2 it removed the link disk feature and had the song unlocked already, so get that instead. The games that have link feature are black square with clazziquai edition, portable 1 with portable 2. Otherwise also get black square and fever (fever just combines portable 1 & 2 for a western release) If you’re an absolute beginner get the clazziquai edition first, it’s the easiest version for judgement with also a 2 button option to get used to the buttons, the tour mode is also a lot easier as black square would require 100% judgment by the 3rd last section just to unlock things. However from memory most games do have English, with only the music lyrics being affected by region (Japanese, Korean or English version of a few songs) biggest example is The Last Dance. There is no region lock for disks, but there are language restrictions. Get the psp 3000, psp 2000 buttons and the analogue stick has some durability issues so the newer version had nicer buttons and a stronger build. From playing the psp djmax games for several years (since portable 1) here are my recommendations:
